FAQs

The Texas Center is a program of Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas

No, it is a department under the umbrella of the university.

The Texas Center operates from a great home base. Schreiner University not only identifies itself proudly—and uniquely—Texan, but it also supplies partial funding and three critical elements to the work of the Texas Center:
1. Structure
2. Governance
3. Sustainability

Building 53—or as we like to call it on campus “Area 53”—is a 1960s vintage stacked stone building originally designed as the campus clinic. While charming, it is small, having only 2,500 sq. ft. Our impact and reach, though, is statewide.

Yes, but . . . We have hosted small groups (think under 20 folks) in our facility and there is interesting art, books, and artifacts on site, it is really an office complex. We look forward to the day when we have a more Texas-sized facility to host gatherings, educational events, and livestream classes. That remains for the future at this point.

Endowments are like individuals who have a 401(K) or investment account. The money we put in the bank yields interest revenue which we use to fund operations and programming. It ensures a level of income that allows our creative efforts to be channeled toward our educational mission instead of constantly having to raise money.

Because doing what we do takes money. Until we have a large enough endowment to support our operations, we will need the support of our friends.

You can take classes from The Texas Center, just not at building 53. Our initiatives include E Pluribus, Texas,® an online education ecosystem that includes videos, lesson plans, and a mobile app all available online.

Yes. But you must come here to use them, and they don’t leave the building. Most of our titles deal with Texas, military history, the American Civil War, 19th Century immigration, African American history, and the Old South.

Check our website. TexS, Western Art Academy, and E Pluribus Texas are our big efforts. We also have a publishing arm—State House Press—and the heritage and cultural travel operation—Bear Leader Tours.

Yes, under certain circumstances. Contact us to begin the conversation.

Yes, under certain circumstances. Contact us to begin the conversation.

Our mission is in our name, the Texas CENTER. In this day and age, though, trying to be the voice of reason in an increasingly polarized public conversation can be challenging. As one might imagine, we have people take exception to what we are doing from all sides. Various lawmakers and state officials have taken an interest in the work of The Texas Center.

Among the things we want to provide in the future is a travel series where we explore the history and culture of the Lone Star State; we are looking for partnerships with Texas historical and cultural sites; and we will serve as a resource to teachers, students, and all Texans interested on how we came to be . . . the place we came to be!
